ISLE OF WIGHT

Dear Diary....

WEEK 2

Monday 19th September

We set off early with a coach full of excited children. Before we knew it, we were at Portsmouth and the children were keen to get on the ferry.  We had a smooth crossing and the children enjoyed sitting out on the deck in the sunshine.

The Queen's funeral played on the radio as we travelled to Alum Bay and the children listened and observed the two minute silence as it came to an end.

The sun kept shining on our walk to the Needles and the children were excited to see the landform, which we had been learning about back in school.  After a quick snack break, we headed over Tennyson Down to the monument, which was our lunch spot.  The children enjoyed listening to Crossing the Bar and spent time looking at the monument and the words of the poem around it.

The coach met us at Freshwater and it was one last journey across the island to our hotel.  The children were excited to get to their rooms and unpack before enjoying some games before dinner.

The children had all worked up an appetite and the clean plates told us that they enjoyed the food.  The day finished with a walk along the beach, where the children enjoyed listening to another poem (The Wreck of the Hesperus) and found out the meaning of the letters on the post box we passed.

The children were keen to get into bed and turn their lights off - the fresh air has definitely tired them out.  They are all looking forward to day two tomorrow.

Tuesday 20th September

It was an early start for us today and most of the children needed to be woken up in time for breakfast at 7.30am. After a quick breakfast, we set off for Osborne House.

We started with a tour of the house itself and were lucky to have it to ourselves, before any of the public were allowed in. The children asked many interesting questions and loved finding out more about Queen Victoria and her family. After the house, we walked down to explore the grounds of Swiss Cottage and the museum. The children were amazed by many of the exhibits, including the world’s smallest scissors.

We had a super spot for lunch, down at Queen Victoria’s private beach, and the children enjoyed the sunshine. We spent some time on the beach and I am sure you will look forward to seeing some of the many treasures the children found there and carried back with them in their pockets.

After a quick stop off at the shop, it was back to the hotel. The children spent some time resting their weary legs before writing a postcard home – hopefully these will be landing on your doormats soon.

The final excitement of the day was after dinner; we took a short coach trip to Ryde for bowling night. The children had a great night and we had some amazing scores of over 100; top score for the night went to Mr Stratton.

It was a quiet bus journey home from Ryde and then the children went straight up to bed. As we write, they are all quiet and dreaming of beach day tomorrow.

Wednesday 21st September

Another glorious day on the Isle of Wight!

The children had a bit of a lie in today with a more leisurely breakfast time of 8.30am. It was then a short walk to crazy golf. The children loved playing against each other in teams and we clearly have some budding golfers. After some games in the sunshine, we headed back to the hotel for lunch.

The afternoon started with a fossil hunt along the beach. The children found many treasures and you will be able to see them tomorrow when you unpack their suitcases.

We rushed straight from the fossil hunt to the beach for ice-cream and beach fun. The children filled their time playing games, digging holes and paddling in the sea.

All children needed a shower before dinner and the disco. As we write, the children have packed their cases and are settling down after a fantastic disco.

We are setting off tomorrow morning for Carisbrooke Castle and then we will be getting the ferry back home.

Thursday 22nd September

Home sweet home!

Our final day on the island started well and the children were all packed and down for breakfast by 8.30am. After a final check of the rooms, we set off for Carisbrooke Castle.

The children enjoyed a workshop, where they found out about castle life in the past, and then loved seeing how the well worked with Jack the donkey on the wheel. All children climbed up to the keep and around the castle walls before visiting the shop to spend their last few pennies. We enjoyed our last lunch in the sunshine and then set off to Fishbourne to catch the ferry home.

We had a great week away and the children made us extremely proud. We look forward to taking all our experiences back into the classroom next week.
