ISLE OF WIGHT

Dear Diary....

WEEK 1

Monday 12th September 2022

We are writing this as 47 tired children are fast asleep in bed.

The day started with a sunny crossing over to the island. The children couldn’t believe how quick the journey was and we were at Carisbrooke Castle in time for lunch.

We had an informative talk about castle life in the past and learnt some of the history of the castle as well. The highlight of the visit was meeting Jack the donkey in the well house – he was a bit naughty, but did his job in the end.

After spending some money in the shop, we headed to Sandown to settle into our hotel.

It was pizza for tea and chocolate cake for desert, which was loved by all.

The final activity of the day was a beach walk. The children enjoyed looking at the ‘hutterly’ fantastic beach huts before heading back to bed.

Tuesday 13th September 2022

The sun did not shine on us today, but that didn’t stop the fun.

It was an early start this morning and the teachers had some very tired children to wake up for breakfast at 7am. We travelled across the island to Osborne House and had priority access before the general public.

We were lucky enough to have a guided tour of the house and everyone, including the adults, learnt many interesting facts. The children were astounded by the house and the grounds, which were beautiful even in the rain. We walked through the grounds and investigated the ice house and the museum, where there were many fascinating curiosities.

The children showed great resilience and spirit at lunchtime; we found some shelter under the trees and enjoyed semi-soggy sandwiches. It was a prime viewing spot for Queen Victoria’s bathing machine and the children were interested to find out how it was used in the past.

After a quick trip to the shop, we headed back to the hotel for a well-earned rest. A hearty meal set us up for an evening of bowling, which was enjoyed by all.

We managed to keep everyone awake on the coach trip back and then it was straight to bed for 47 very tired children.

Wednesday 14th September 2022

After the luxury of a lie-in, we ate our breakfast to the sound of pounding rain. The weather didn’t put us off and we set off for a short walk to the dinosaur museum.

We had a slight change of plan at the museum and were given the fantastic opportunity of exploring the museum and having a fossil handling session. The children loved interacting with the many different exhibits and were full engaged in the fossil talk.

Luckily, the weather brightened at lunchtime and we were able to walk to crazy golf without our hoods up. The children enjoyed putting through the dinosaur-themed obstacles and we managed to get a few hole in ones.

By the end of the golf, the sun had come out and we had a fantastic few hours playing on the beach and paddling in the sea. A delicious ice-cream topped off our beach day.

It was a BBQ for tea and then the children impressed us with their packing skills before the disco.

The children are all asleep in bed and ready for a busy final day tomorrow. We will be leaving the hotel after breakfast and heading to the Needles. The children will be extremely tired when they return home as our final activity will be a walk across Tennyson Down.

Thursday 15th September 2022

Some very tired children after some serious dancing last awoke to the final day of their year 6 residential.

The children were keen to get up and eat a hearty breakfast, setting them up for the ‘long walk’ later in the morning. We travelled across the island to Alum Bay, where the children enjoyed creating sand art ornaments and spending any left over money in the shop.

We set off to see the Needles, which we had learnt about in school, and the children were excited to see the landmarks in the flesh. From here, we buttoned our coats and started the four mile walk across Tennyson Down in some slightly blustery conditions. The wind did not hold us back and we completed the walk in good time; we made sure we found a sheltered spot for lunch so that we could replenish our energy levels for the final part of the walk.

We have had a great ‘holiday’; the children have shown enthusiasm for everything we have done and been a pleasure to take away.
